WAV Access Types Explained: Ramps, Lifts, and More

When choosing a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), understanding the nuances of different lift types is crucial.

Rear-Entry WAVs

  • Fold-Out Ramps: These are a classic option, offering simplicity and affordability. However, they can be less convenient in tight spaces due to the wheelchair user entering through the rear of the vehicle.
  • Automatic Ramps: These provide effortless operation, ideal for users with limited upper body strength. However, they can be more expensive.

Side-Entry WAVs

  • Chairlifts: These are versatile and suitable for various wheelchair types and sizes particulary heavier or larger wheelchairs. However, they can be slower and less convenient for some users.
  • Fiorella Lifts: These offer smooth operation and minimal impact on the vehicle's interior as they take up last space and can potentially fold to the side to free up rear space. However, they can be potentially more expensive.
  • Side-Entry Lifts: These provide easy access, especially for heavy wheelchairs and entering through the side can be convenient for street parking. Side entry can also maximize interior space as chairs at the back of the vehicle don't need to be removed make way for the ramp or lift. However, they can be more challenging to operate in tight spaces such as supermarket parking bays when rear entry may be more convenient.

Ultimately, the best lift type for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences. Consider factors such as your physical ability, wheelchair type, and budget when making your decision.
