How to Get Vehicle Tax Exemption for a WAV in the UK

How to Get Vehicle Tax Exemption for a WAV in the UK

For many disabled drivers and adapted car owners in the UK, a wheelchair accessible vehicle (WAV) is more than just a car – it's freedom. It allows you to get to work, appointments, and social events independently, boosting your quality of life. But the financial burden of owning a vehicle shouldn't hold you back. Here at Jubilee Automotive Group, we're committed to helping you navigate the road to freedom, including the perk of potentially obtaining free vehicle tax as a disabled driver.

Who Qualifies Vehicle Tax Exemption?

The good news is that the UK government offers a vehicle tax exemption for qualifying disabled drivers. To be eligible, you must receive the higher rate or enhanced rate of the mobility component of one of the following benefits:

  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • War Pensioners' Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)
  • Child Disability Payment (CDP)

How to Apply for Free Vehicle Tax

The process for claiming your exemption depends on whether you're registering a new WAV or applying for an existing vehicle.

Jubilee Automotive Group can assist you with the process. If you purchase and Vehicle from us we'll handle the application for free tax exemption on your behalf.

Existing Vehicle Registration

1. Online or Phone: You can apply online or by phone through the DVLA website (https://www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-tax-exemption-disability) or by calling 0300 200 3000.

2. Post Office: If you prefer, you can visit a Post Office branch that deals with vehicle tax. Take the same documents listed above for new vehicle registration.

Vehicle tax reduction

Eligibility

You could also  get a 50% reduction in vehicle tax if you get the:

The vehicle should be registered in the disabled person’s name or their nominated driver’s name.

You cannot get a reduction for getting the DLA lower rate mobility component.

Additional Considerations

Here are some additional points to keep in mind:

  • Blue Badge: While not directly related to vehicle tax, having a Blue Badge can be helpful for disabled drivers. You can find information on applying for a Blue Badge here: https://www.gov.uk/apply-blue-badge.
  • Vehicle Type: The exemption typically applies to most car tax classes, but it's always best to check with the DVLA if you're unsure about your specific WAV.
